Becoming a Solicitor

When we interview for the post of Trainee Solicitor we are seeking potential successors for our business.

We value the fact that most of our current Partners are ‘home-grown’ having completed their training contracts with us. Daldeep Jaswal is our authorised Training Partner and has overall responsibility for our Trainee Solicitors during the period of their Training Contract or Qualifying Work Experience (QWE).

Our aim is to provide you with an excellent all-round training and development programme. Primarily providing you with the technical expertise across a range of disciplines and in addition cultivating your soft-skills such as client care and business development. At the end of your contract you should be a competent and confident solicitor with the ability to take on and build up your own case load.

Our Criteria for Selection

We are seeking forward thinking individuals with a drive to learn and the intellectual ability to reach their aspired goals. You should have strong interpersonal skills enabling you to communicate with others at all levels. You should have some commercial and business awareness. 2.1 degree in any discipline is the minimum requirement.

Induction

We provide a thorough and comprehensive induction spread over a 2 week period. A proportion of that time will be spent within the department of your first seat for an introduction to policies and procedures.

From past experience we know that having a mentor to support you during your first year has a positive effect on your ability to integrate into the culture of the firm. We find that the person best qualified for this position is a current Trainee who will have the experience to guide you through your first few months and help you adjust to working life as a Trainee.

Seats

During your training contract you will spend time in both the commercial and private client areas which will include seats in contentious and non-contentious departments. Depending on business needs at the time, you may spend time in any of the following areas of law:

  • Employment and Dispute Resolution
  • Family
  • Private Client – (Wills, Trusts and Probate)
  • Commercial Property
  • Residential Property
  • Company and Commercial

If you are joining us for QWE as part of the SQE route, you may spend the whole time in one area of law.

Our Offices

We have three offices. Our main office is a modern open-plan office in the centre of the historic spa town of Tunbridge Wells which is 30 miles south of London.

In the medieval town of Cranbrook, situated in the heart of the ‘Garden of England’, our office can be found nestled amongst the quaint independent shops in the High Street. The town is surrounded by farmland and open countryside.

East Grinstead is a town in West Sussex near the East Sussex, Surrey and Kent borders. Local attractions include Ashdown Forest (where Winnie-the-Pooh stories are set) and the Bluebell Railway. The town is also the site of the Queen Victoria Hospital where plastic surgeon Archibold McIndoe treated burns victims of World War II. Close to the office is the Chequer Mead Community Arts Centre which includes a large purpose built theatre.

Location

You will be based at our Tunbridge Wells office but we would expect you to spend a little time at our other offices to gain experience of the different cultures.
