Sports Clubs

Sports clubs are not dissimilar to charities in that they do not normally distribute any surplus income to their members. However, they differ in that any such surplus is applied for the club’s own purposes rather than for the general benefit of the community.

As with charities, sports clubs may be constituted in a variety of different ways, for example as companies limited by guarantee or (somewhat bizarrely) as industrial and provident societies.

Buss Murton acts for a number of sports clubs, in a number of different sports. The kind of situations in which we help them include:

  • conversion from a members club to one with limited liability
  • drafting and amending club rules, and other constitutional issues
  • property transactions
  • assisting with trading and financing arrangements
  • employment issues
